ShieldTEC is the UK’s only hot melt waterproofing system to hold BBA certification for warm roof applications. With a 120-year independently assessed design life, a self-healing membrane that remains live throughout its service life, and BROOF(t4) fire classification, ShieldTEC sets the benchmark for long-term flat roof waterproofing performance on commercial and high-value residential projects.

Available for warm roof and inverted roof configurations, ShieldTEC is specified via NBS Chorus work section J31 and is backed by a 25-year guarantee through Shield Membranes’ approved contractor network. Full technical support — including build-up design, U-value calculations and pre-contract site visits — is available free of charge.

The membrane remains in a live, reactive state throughout its service life. Minor penetrations from fixings, fasteners or foot traffic self-seal without intervention — eliminating future repair costs and the need for re-waterproofing after subsequent trades.

ShieldTEC holds two independent BBA certificates: No. 20/5793 for warm roof applications and No. 17/5459 for inverted roof applications. The system also carries BROOF(t4) fire classification, independently tested to the standard required by UK building regulations.

System Components

ShieldPRIME — Quick-dry bituminous primer applied to prepared cementitious substrates at 0.15–0.20 L/m² to receive the ShieldTEC membrane.

ShieldTEC PS2 — Polymer-modified bitumen vapour control layer (VCL) at 2 kg/m², torch-applied to the structural deck before insulation in warm roof build-ups.

ShieldTEC Compound — Hot-applied polymer-modified bitumen membrane reinforced with ShieldFLEECE. Applied in two coats at 3mm DFT per coat, achieving a minimum total thickness of 6mm. The self-healing, fully-bonded monolithic waterproofing layer.

ShieldFLEECE — Non-woven polyester reinforcement fleece at 50 g/m², embedded between the two layers of ShieldTEC compound to provide tensile strength and dimensional stability.

ShieldTEC PS4 — Polymer-modified bitumen underlay at 4 kg/m², used as an access and protection layer over the completed membrane.

ShieldTEC PS5 — Mineral-surfaced polymer-modified bitumen cap sheet at 5 kg/m², used as the exposed finish layer where a mineral surface is specified.
